New English Library launched Science Fiction Monthly in 1974 in response to numerous requests from readers for a way to obtain copies of the artwork that NEL was using for their paperbacks. Science Fiction Monthly was in tabloid format, and including many posters of science fiction artwork. It was initially very successful, but the fiction quality was weak, and after a while sales began to drop off. Production costs were high, so the magazine required a high circulation to be profitable, but by early 1976 the readership was down to 20,000 and NEL decided to fold it.
